Born Global: June 2022

Hello friend,

With a new Australian government in Canberra and major events back in full swing, a reinvigorated mood is palpable, despite the energy crisis and economic concerns.

While the pandemic may feel behind us, the independent inquiry into Australia’s handling of Covid-19 provides a chance for you to have your say about the experience of overseas Australians, and recommend actions to improve the response to future crises.

We are pleased to support InSyncNetwork who are investigating the employment and career considerations for returning expats. If that’s you, fill in the survey and you can also join the informal and interactive virtual #CoffeeHour later this month. And for those at the beginning of their global career journey, the next cohort of the Advance NextGen program kicks off in August.

And we love our community stories – thank you Tristan Clemons for sharing your reflections. There are now even more ways to keep up to date with our stories, with the launch of an Advance TikTok account, for content in a whole new format!

‘Till next time,

Johanna Pitman

AUSTRALIA’S HANDLING OF COVID

The pandemic had an outsized impact on overseas Australians. With an independent review of Australia’s handling of Covid-19, Advance will share the views of overseas Australians, and recommend actions to be better prepared for future crises. You can check out the draft points to be included in the submission, and let us know what else we should include here

YOUR CAREER, YOUR WAY

Insync Network Group’s Australian Expat Careers Survey investigates the role work and career plays in the decision to come home. Every survey participant will receive a copy of the report and access a free career repatriation workshop – helpful tools for anyone looking to come home in the future! If you are an expat currently living overseas or have returned in the last three years, find the survey here.

STATEMENT FROM THE HEART

You may have heard references to the Uluru Statement from the Heart during Reconciliation Week earlier this month, and during PM Albanese’s acceptance speech on election night. It is a call from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution. Find out more here.

POSTCARD FROM MISSISSIPPI

Dr Tristan Clemons, Advance Emerging Leader Award Finalist 2021, speaks of his journey moving from Perth to the US. Although a big move entails big changes, sometimes far from what you have in mind, Tristan has reflected on the importance of community and enjoying the journey (along with all of its twists and turns). Read more here.
