The NextGen program expands the Advance commitment to mentoring the next generation of leaders. Our aim is to inspire an international outlook in career planning.

The Advance NextGen is a FREE program open to individuals in the final year of their university degree through to the first 5 years of their career (approximately 20-30 years old). In 2021, the program extends from July to November, combining online and in-person sessions with award-winning speakers, and the chance to get exclusive access to the prestigious Advance Awards 2021 celebration. Defining You

You have the degree, and you may have had the gap year, but how do you get that first job or a promotion? Defining who you are, creating your own brand and leveraging LinkedIn can bring you immediate advantages. Learn why your LinkedIn presence matters, and how to use it to your advantage.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The importance of building your personal brand to attract the right kind of opportunities
  • How to give yourself the edge in a competitive market
  • The simple ways you can use LinkedIn to avoid having to compete for jobs like everyone else

Reviewing your personal brand

Now we know all about LinkedIn and personal branding, let’s apply these takeaways and delve deeper into our own profile. Look at it objectively. Use the views of the break out groups to give constructive feedback. A group activity will share tips and hints to enhance your profile.

Network Building

We are constantly told it is not what you know but who you know. How do you build your network when you don’t think you currently have one? We’ll figure out to beat the nerves and get your point across in an interview or meeting, and be memorable in a good way.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Employability – how to develop networks here and overseas and put your best self forward
  • Resilience – taking feedback the good, the bad and the ugly and use that feedback to grow
  • Rapport and trust cannot be learnt from a textbook. How do you find these qualities in yourself?

Samuel completed a PhD in Economics at Oxford University in 2014 as a John Monash Scholar. He has advised the World Bank and has worked with the IMF, the Bank of England, the Australian Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and McKinsey & Co., among others.

Advance Awards 2021

The Advance Awards are our pinnacle event of the year. Participants around the world will join one of the satellite sites or the online celebration from their home. All NextGen program participants will be invited to create social media posts and/or a blog, to share their experience and build their network from the Awards celebration. Participants who live around Sydney will also be invited to attend the in-person Gala dinner on 23 March 2022, and sit with leading decision-makers and global Australians.

Do you have an idea or a dream job? While you are at the start of your career journey, learn what can you do now to reach your short and long term goals.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The importance of believing in yourself and your idea
  • How to dig deep and find that courage
  • How to be creative and strategic in pursuing your goal

Tim has demonstrated his versatility, vision and business acumen, having founded and grown three successful businesses – Zoox, XYZ Studios, Crayon and his latest venture, HYPR.

Networking success and finding your passion

In this facilitated session, you will explore who you currently know (and who they know, and who those people know!) to find the personal introductions that will give you your best chance of a response. Drill down into your own strategy and brainstorm options in small groups.

Pitching your idea

For our final session and graduation ceremony we’ll discuss:

  • How do you sell yourself, or your idea to decision-makers?
  • Can you avoid self-doubt, be bold and brave, and grow through feedback? And even rejection?
  • How to understand other people’s agendas and motivations, and tailor your pitch accordingly.

Dr Darian McBain is the Advance Awards Sustainability Winner 2021. She is a world recognised expert, speaker and author on sustainability, supply chains and business human rights. Darian will be sharing her motivation to try to find sustainable solutions to society’s challenges rather than just looking at the problems.
