Born Global: July 2023

Hello friend,

Each month the Advance team searches for relevant Aussie stories that may not receive international coverage… And there have been plenty to choose from in recent weeks! The fall-out from “Robodebt” and other public sector scandals 😱; the release of the Yes and No arguments for The Voice referendum; and the 2023 winner of the Miles Franklin Award 📚. And if frequent flyers amongst us have been wondering if flights are getting bumpier… – they are

From within the Advance community, this month we share updates from recent graduates of the NextGen program, and a postcard from the Hon. Gabrielle Upton sharing her recommendations to improve gender outcomes in parliament. Speaking of change, the key insights from the recent Global Town Hall on Research Commercialisation are available, and check out 👇 the mesmerising work of Di Bresciani exploring the wonders of Australian light 🎨☀️.

Next week we start announcing the 25 incredible GameChangers being recognised in the 2023 Global Australian Awards. Make sure you follow along on socials 👇.

SILVER LINING FOR FLYERS

With climate change blamed for more bumpy flights, we thought members might find interesting the causes of turbulence, tips on routes to avoid, and the best place to sit! Long-haul flights ✈️ over the Alps, Japan and into South Africa and Australia can all be notoriously turbulent, but the good news is that avoidance technologies are outpacing increases in atmospheric turbulence. Phew 😅!

IMPACT ACROSS ROLES

After 12 years in NSW politics, the Hon. Gabrielle Upton shared with Advance her global Australian roots, and her post-parliamentary endeavours to improve gender equality outcomes in Australian politics. Check out her practical recommendations to create a more inclusive and supportive political environment here.

With four cohorts and nearly 200 people completing the Advance NextGen program, we love to see their career growth and support for each other. From Berlin, Isobel shares her journey in a start-up, and Mayura outlines her transition to biotech in Singapore. See all the updates here

AUSTRALIAN LIGHT IN FOCUS

Have you ever thought Australian light transforms colours and landscape in delicate and subtle ways? As shared in UK shows last year, musician and visual artist Di Bresciani OAM presents almost 200 vibrant colour reproductions in a limited edition book to reveal Australian light caught in its many moods. See Di’s work here.

FLEXING YOUR AUSSIE IDENTITY

Last month we asked you how your Australian identity impacts your work overseas, and your responses revealed so much! For nearly half (45%) of you, it helps you connect with people 🌏🤗. But we valued the 10% of respondents who suggested it’s more complicated. 👉 Check out all previous polls here
