Public Housing & Food Tasting Tour

April 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm AEST

Public housing and hawker centres are ubiquitous in the Singapore landscape and both have received international recognition. From being labelled as having some of the worst slums in the world, public housing in Singapore, or what is known today as HDB (Housing Development Board), has become one of the most successful housing initiatives in the world, being awarded three UN awards over the last 25 years. You’ll visit Toa Payoh, one of the first public housing projects on the island, and hear about the hows and whys of HDB. You’ll also stop by the HDB Hub and see displays of various apartments and learn why they’re considered to be marriage proposals!

The fun does not stop there. In 2020, Singapore’s hawker culture was listed as one of UNESCO’s lists of intangible cultural heritage. On the second part of this tour, you’ll head to one of the most popular hawker centres in Toa Payoh to ‘makan’! Some of the stalls there are so famous that locals will travel island-wide to eat what some consider as ‘die die must try’ food! So, let’s join Singaporeans in their ‘community dining room’ to indulge in their favourite pastime. Afterwards, you’ll have a quick jaunt around the neighbourhood.
