About our speaker
H.E. Gary Quinlan AO is the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia. He is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and was formerly Deputy Secretary and Australia’s Senior Official to ASEAN and to the East Asia Summit.
He was Australia’s chief negotiator with Timor-Leste on maritime boundaries. Gary has served as Principal Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security, and has held senior positions in DFAT responsible for North Asia, the Americas and Europe, and corporate management, including crisis management. He has had extensive experience in multilateral negotiations on UN matters, law of the sea and the Antarctic.
Gary has previously served overseas as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, and Australian Representative on the United Nations Security Council. His other overseas assignments have been as Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy in Washington DC; High Commissioner to Singapore; First Secretary, Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York; Australian Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO in Paris; and Second Secretary in the Australian Embassy in Dublin.
He has been an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) since 2016, for his “distinguished service to public administration in the field of international relations as a senior diplomat and ambassador, and as an advisor to government on foreign policy.”
