Professor Mimi Zou

Professor Mimi Zou is a Director of Advance Global Australians (APAC).

Mimi is a world-leading researcher and expert advisor to international organisations, governments, nonprofits and businesses on global AI governance issues. Her award-winning research has focused on legal and regulatory issues related to new and emerging technologies, particularly AI, and the use of AI in the legal sector to improve access to justice.

She has held numerous senior academic appointments at world-leading universities. Mimi is Head of School of Private & Commercial Law at UNSW’s Faculty of Law & Justice.

She is also Visiting Fellow at Oxford Martin School and a guest lecturer on Oxford Law Faculty and Computer Science Department's flagship course on Law and Computer Science. 

In a previous appointment at Oxford, Professor Zou founded its first law tech lab and led 12 researchers from diverse disciplines on projects in collaboration with industry and policymakers. She also founded a women-led, VC-backed law tech/reg tech AI company with an Oxford computer scientist. She is an active champion for women and minority founders in this ecosystem and mentors and advises cutting-edge startups globally.

Professor Zou has held several high-profile advisory roles in international organisations and the UK government. Notable appointments include the UK’s Responsible Technology Adoption Unit (formerly Centre for Data Ethics and Governance, the UK government expert body on responsible AI), Senior Data Governance Panel of the UK Ministry of Justice and Judiciary, the Civil Justice Council and LawtechUK Panel. She has also served on international task forces of the G7, World Economic Forum, UNIDROIT, World Bank Group and the International Panel on Information Environment. 
 
She has been called to the Bar in England and Wales and admitted as a solicitor in NSW. She graduated from the University of Oxford with the Bachelor of Civil Law (Distinction) and Doctor of Philosophy in Law, and from the University of Sydney with Bachelor of Economic and Social Sciences (1st Class Honours & Uni Medal) and Bachelor of Laws (1st Class Honours).
