Prue Clarke: Advocating for social change through quality journalism

Advance just launched the GameChanger Boardroom lunch series, to inspire Australian decision-makers and future leaders with a global outlook, courage, and optimism. In an exclusive conversation hosted by Gilbert + Tobin, our supporters gained access to global ideas from award-winning journalist and innovator Prue Clarke.

Prue Clarke is the 2014 Advance Social Impact Award winner, who has applied her success to make quality journalism more accessible, particularly in war-ravaged countries. In this inaugural event of the series, she shared her journey and passion for challenging the status quo, and her remarks include highlights of her award-winning career which led her to be an advocate for social change.

The intimate discussion weaved together some key insights, including Prue’s passion for capability-building in journalism, with her views into foreign aid and philanthropic support for the information economy. The audience also learned Prue’s perspective on Australian media, together with her contrasting experiences with the response to bias and structural racism in the USA and Australia. The discussion truly demonstrated the understanding that comes from international exposure and determination to make an impact.

The audience included leading decision-makers in corporate, academic and government roles, who certainly stimulated a diverse, engaging and intimate dialogue.

A long-time Advance supporter, John Williamson-Noble warmly hosted the event at Gilbert+Tobin, bringing award-winning foreign correspondent Peter Greste, who was imprisoned in Egypt for 400 days, to join the discussion. Peter shared some key takeaways on steps being taken to secure media freedom, including the important work of the Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom which was established with the support of Gilbert+Tobin and partner, Chris Flynn.

Doug Ferguson, NSW Chairman at KPMG and Non Executive Director of Advance, chaired the lunch and captured the importance of these series to follow the journey of Advance Award winners and demonstrate the value of the Australia diaspora and global Australians.
