Cameron McLean

Cameron McLean is a global leader in the rapidly growing fintech industry. Since starting out at Westpac in Sydney more than 25 years ago, he has built a global career as a senior executive working at the intersection of technology and financial services. Today, he is Senior Vice President for Europe and Australia Enterprise at PayPal, where he’s responsible for the commercial growth of PayPal’s global digital payments platform in some of the world’s largest and most dynamic economies.

Mr McLean first joined PayPal in 2005 through the acquisition of VeriSign Payment Services, and has played a key role in driving the company’s business performance across global markets ever since. From 2012, he served as PayPal’s Managing Director and Vice President of the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in 2016 added Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to his European leadership responsibilities. He then served as Vice President and Commercial Officer of PayPal’s Core Markets including the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and in 2018 his role was expanded to lead PayPal’s global large enterprise customer segment. From 2019 to 2021 Mr McLean was Senior Vice President, International Markets.

Mr McLean’s fascination with fintech developed at university. As an undergraduate, he studied banking, finance and international trade at Monash University, followed by a Masters of Management specialising in Technology at the ANU. This combination of finance and tech sparked his passion, and opened up a world of possibility in what was at the time still an emerging field.  Early in his career at Westpac, as Manager of Electronic Commerce, he was part of the foundation team that launched internet banking at the bank. Over the twenty five years since then, he has continued to operate at the edge of modern finance, driving world-leading customer innovation such as PayPal’s global pilot for Free Person-To-Person payments in the UK, and launching PayPal’s first Working Capital pilot in the UK, which has now gone global and has provided over US $25.6B in capital through over 1.3M loans in the U.S, Australia, UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Mr McLean is well-regarded across industry and government for his leadership and expertise. He is Co-Chair of the B20 Indonesia Trade & Investment Task Force for 2022 and sits on the Payments Council of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Now one of the world’s most senior fintech executives, Mr McLean attributes much of his success to a focus on developing his employees and having a customer centric mindset. He is passionate about building great teams, and pays close attention to providing growth opportunities for team members, developing the next generation of fintech leaders. In recognition of his commitment to fostering inclusion, equity and opportunity for his people, in 2021 Mr McLean won the Valued Ally Award in the Seramount Global Above and Beyond Awards.
