Neima Candy is an accomplished health professional whose work has had a positive impact on the provision of health services, disease treatment and prevention across Liberia. After completing a Master’s of Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Neima returned to Liberia as a Technical Assistant with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW). There she trained more than 50 national monitors in 15 Liberian counties in carrying out quarterly integrated supportive supervision as a quality control measure. She also collaboratively planned and coordinated an end-of-project capacity assessment for the MOHSW’s Rebuilding Basic Health Services project.
In July 2014, Neima was appointed National Ebola Coordinator at the Liberian Red Cross. She is the Health and Care Coordinator and the Health Care in Danger (HCiD) focal person at the at the Liberian National Red Cross Society to lead 100 staff members and 2,850 volunteers in fighting the Ebola epidemic sweeping Liberia. Neima managed the US$25 million response budget, trained 150 burial volunteers in the proper use of personal protective equipment, and coordinated and supervised 12 international health delegates. Under her management, no Red Cross volunteer or staff member contracted Ebola. Neima’s leadership directly led to Liberia being declared Ebola free in May 2015 and was a major contributor to the containment of a global threat.
Neima coordinate’s the implementation of four Community Based Health Projects (CBHPs) geared towards the Ebola recovery in 10 Counties in Liberia to build resilience within Ebola affected communities, using strategies like the Community Event Based Surveillance (CEBS), Psychosocial Support (PSS), Community Based Health and First Aid (CBHFA), Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for Ebola and other priority diseases.
Neima is also the Executive Director for the Health Promotion Professional Association Liberia (HPPA), a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization that advocates for the rights of Health Promoters, and addresses issues pertaining to health promotion practices in Liberia. Just recently, Neima was elected as the Vice President of the Liberian Australian Alumni Association (LAAA).
Neima received the University of Newcastle 2015 Alumni Award Recipient for National Leadership.
