Lumicrux

May 29, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm AEST

Picture the Southern Cross. It is a potent symbol on our flag and in our skies. This constellation has been recognised for millennia and is known to our Indigenous kin as Mirabooka. In the Lumicrux workshop, Indigenous astrophysicist Kirsten Banks reveals her people’s ancient astronomical knowledge while you learn the art of Miura folding to create beautiful glowing star shapes from photoluminescent paper. This is a hands-on opportunity for all star gazers, budding astronomers and shape-makers to play, craft, learn, collaborate and contribute to a collective installation that represents the shape of the Southern Cross.

Lumicrux is hosted by STEAMpop, education consultants who value the intersection between the Arts and STEM by providing unique, transdisciplinary experiences. By demonstrating innovative methods engaging with STEAM, they inject fun and a ‘pop’ of curiosity to spark life-long learning through making and creating something beautiful. As participants young and old have fun making illuminated objects they’ll foster an appreciation of how First Nations people used the stars to guide them through all aspects of their daily life and culture.
