Born Global: March 2022

Hello friend,

The last month has highlighted the desperate plight of others, whether it be in Ukraine, or flooding across Australia’s east coast. We are also thinking of Advance members in China and Hong Kong impacted by the latest Covid-related rules and lockdowns. In this edition, we bring you stories of hope and ways to help.

Our annual survey of global Australians exposed the depth of expat talent overseas and returning to Australia. In our preview of the results on March 3rd, Peter O’Brien from Russell Reynolds Associates, shared tips for those returning to leadership positions in Australia, and Australia’s Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, Elizabeth Ward, shed light on the current situation in Hong Kong

It is with great appreciation that we recognise the contribution of Yasmin Allen,  Chairman of Advance over the last 4 years, for steering Advance through this period of digitisation and enhanced programs for emerging Australian leaders. Yasmin will pass the baton to Andrew Low, who we are pleased to introduce to the Advance community.

‘Till next time,
Johanna Pitman

Are there global Australians where you are living that should be nominated? Let us know here!

POSTCARD FROM SYDNEY

In March each year, many organisations take a moment to reflect on their diversity and inclusion efforts. Current NextGen Program participant, Afeeya Akhand, shares her perspective on this topic. Afeeya discusses the unique position a multicultural background gives to create global impact, lessons she’s learnt from the NextGen Program, and the importance of believing in your worth. More

AUSSIES HELPING UKRAINE

Daniel Russell and Roger Scott are Australians living in Poland doing regular runs to the Polish border and into Ukraine to deliver much-needed supplies and pick up desperate refugees. They shared their experience with the ABC and RN Drive (jump to 14:10 to listen). You can follow their journey via this blog or Daniel’s Instagram, and/or donate to their fundraiser here.

2021 SURVEY EVENT/EXPAT TIPS

The results of the annual survey were previewed in a conversation featuring Peter O’Brien (Russell Reynolds Associates) and Elizabeth Ward (Australia’s Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau). A recording of the event and the full report will be posted shortly. The survey shows a huge influx of Australian professionals in senior roles returning to Australia. If that might be you, check out a list of tips shared by Peter for global Australians.
