Yasmin is also Chairman of the Digital Skills Organisation, Chairman of Faethm.ai, Chairman of the Harrison Riedel Foundation, Acting President of the Australian Takeovers Panel, a Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and a member of the board of The George Institute for Global Health, a medical research and commercialisation group.

The Advance Award for Alumni recognises the incredible achievements of international graduates of Australian Universities, who have leveraged their Australian education to achieve success and impact on a global scale. Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Fintech celebrates Global Australians who are leaders within the Finance sector, using technology to disrupt traditional business models, and improving financial services through the clever application of new technologies. This year is the first time we have a dedicated Fintech category, recognising the importance of this industry for Australia, and the growing number of nominations each year in this field.  The outstanding finalists are transforming Financial Services through sophisticated use of data and analytics, developing products for greater financial inclusion, and supporting consumers to improve their financial position. Meet the finalists Ed Robinson, Debra Walton and Simon Loong.


Award Presenter

The Award will be presented by Shayne Elliott, Chief Executive Officer of ANZ. Shayne has over 30 years’ experience in banking in Australia and overseas, in all aspects of the industry. Shayne joined ANZ as CEO Institutional in June 2009, and was appointed Chief Financial Officer in 2012.

Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Social Impact recognises Global Australians who have dedicated their lives to creating a better, fairer and safer society. These altruistic Australians have used their skills and expertise to tackle social issues ranging from human rights, public health, climate justice, free speech and civil liberties, and the empowerment of women and children. The impact of their work is real through their relentless focus on solving critical, chronic and systemic disadvantage. The finalists in this category are to be acknowledged for their sustained work, resilience and strength. Meet the finalists Adam Garone, Leith Greenslade and Jennifer Robinson.


Award Presenter

The Award will be presented by Dr Laode Syarif. Laode is the Executive Director at The Partnership for Governance Reform in Indonesia, and the former Commissioner for Indonesia Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) (2015-2019). Before he joined the Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (Corruption Eradication Commission), Syarif was a Senior Lecturer at Hasanuddin University, Faculty of Law, Makassar, Indonesia.

Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Technology & Entrepreneurship recognises Global Australian trailblazers, who have taken risks and backed an idea to create a thriving technology company. These outstanding individuals link the academic and commercial world to drive better outcomes for consumers and businesses. The finalists in this category have created highly innovative organisations. They are social entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs and investors. Their extraordinary success demonstrates their ability to think into the future, to apply technology to create opportunities, and to do so while surrounded by uncertainty. Meet the finalists Damien Mahoney, Patrick Grove, Sarah Lux-Lee and Dr Arjun Goyal.


Award Presenter

The Award will be presented by Malcom Turnbull AC. Mr Turnbull is a former Australian politician who was the 29th Prime Minister of Australia from 2015 to 2018. Since leaving politics, Mr Turnbull has resumed his business career. He is a senior adviser to KKR and an investor in, and adviser to, many Australian technology businesses. He is a Board member of the International Hydropower Association and Co-Chair of the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower. Mr Turnbull speaks and writes on a range of issues including cyber security, geopolitics and renewable energy.

Judging Process

Alexie Glass-Kantor is Executive Director of Artspace, Sydney, supporting the commissioning of contemporary art, publishing initiatives, and research residencies for artists and curators. She is the Curator for the Encounters sector at Art Basel, Hong Kong which is the curated sector for the presentation of large-scale installations. Alexie shares some of her insights as part of the Judging Panel.

Award Presenter

The Award will be presented by Nick Greiner AC. Nick was Premier and Treasurer of New South Wales from 1988-1992, and Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia from 2017-2020. Aside from his political leadership roles, he has held many senior positions in all walks of life. In February, he took up the position of Consul General for Australia in New York and North East US.

The Advance Award for Education and Research recognises the outstanding Global Australians who are dedicated to educating and training others, with a relentless focus on building an evidence base to inform their teaching. The work of these finalists ranges from research into climate-impacts on agriculture, ensuring best practice teaching in health, through to identifying the workforce skills and competencies needed now and into the future. We applaud the finalists tonight for their ongoing optimism and commitment to advancing knowledge in their chosen fields. The Award will be presented by Tan Le. Tan is the 2012 ICT Advance Award Winner. Tan is the Founder & CEO of EMOTIV, a neuroinformatics company advancing understanding of the human brain through electroencephalography (EEG). She is a technology innovator, entrepreneur, business executive and sought-after speaker.

Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Sustainability celebrates the work of Global Australians who are creating sustainable outcomes for our planet and its many ecosystems. The work of these finalists ranges in focus from influencing the global energy industry to fishing sustainably in our oceans to species conservation. These incredible Australians have spent their varied careers in the pursuit of one goal: preserving the natural world and minimising our impact on it. Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Life Sciences recognises the incredible Global Australians that have dedicated their lives to improving the health and wellbeing of others. Whether this be through the practice of medicine, research or development of medical technology, these individuals have spent their careers seeking innovative ways to approach medicine in general. From researching the possibility of transplanting an artificial heart to seeking solutions to improve sight through stem cells or an artificial eye implant, through to co-founding a biotech company to develop life-science tools with global impact, these finalists really are extraordinary. Their dedication, innovation and collaborative work means that we can visualise a future with better health outcomes for all. Meet the finalists Dr Daniel Timms, Professor Lyndon Da Cruz and Dr Ben Hindson.

The Award will be presented by Professor David Sinclair AO. David is the 2017 Life Sciences Award Winner. He is a tenured Professor in the Genetics Department at the Blavatnik Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston & Co-Director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research, Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney, and co-founder of the journal Aging.

The Asia Impact Award is presented to an Australian who is making an outstanding contribution in the world’s most populous region. The finalists are individuals who are working to create a better, more sustainable future for millions of people.  They are selected because they demonstrate innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship in their chosen field. The focus of our finalists’ work is broad. It ranges from design of the urban environment, research and campaigning on health issues, through to social impact. Whatever their area of work, Advance wishes to acknowledge their inspirational,  ongoing commitment to the communities where they live. Meet the finalists Jimmy Pham AM, Professor Paul Siu Fai Yip, Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman and Dr Cheong Koon Hean.

The Award will be presented by Doug Ferguson. Doug is on the Advance Board and is the NSW Chairman of KPMG and the Partner in Charge, Asia and International Markets. He leads KPMG’s 275 NSW Partners, 5 offices and 3500 employees.

Award Presentation

The Advance Award for Emerging Leaders recognises Global Australians who are at the cutting edge of innovation in their respective fields. These finalists are thought leaders, creators and collaborators who are using their talent in emerging disciplines such as space exploration, robotics and biomaterials. They are still in the early part of their career, and yet have managed to rise to be among the global best, and already “giving back” and contributing to the growth of others. Advance wishes to acknowledge the ingenuity and tenacity of these younger Australians. We are going to hear a lot more from them over the coming years. Meet the finalists Si Chen, Andrea Boyd and Dr Tristan Clemons.

The Award will be presented by Prue Clarke. Prue is the 2014 Social Impact Award Winner. Prue is a non-profit executive, communications specialist, nonprofit news innovator, journalist and professor who has driven change through design and management of projects in the US, Australia, the Pacific and Africa.

The Award will be presented by Sophie Blackall. Sophie is the 2020 Global Icon Award Winner. Sophie is an Australian icon in the world of Children’s Books. She is an award-winning Australian artist who has illustrated over forty books for children and was the first Australian to win the 2016 Caldecott Medal.

Award Presenter

The Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO is Australia’s Ambassador to the United States of America, taking up his posting in Washington in February 2020. Ambassador Sinodinos was previously Australia’s Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science and was a Senator for New South Wales in the Australian Parliament from 2011 to 2019. During his parliamentary career, he also held other key roles in and outside Cabinet, including Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Treasurer.

Closing remarks

Advance.org CEO Johanna Pitman. Johanna is a recognised authority on the changing workforce, and the implications for cities and communities. She has 20 years of experience working across economic development, international trade and public policy through senior roles in Federal and State agencies and organisations in Australia, the UK and the US. Johanna was the Deputy CEO for the Committee for Sydney where she led advocacy for Sydney as a global talent hub and the development of Sydney’s fintech industry. She holds a Masters in Regional Studies (East Asia) from Harvard University, and speaks Japanese and Korean. She is a long time Advance.org member, having attended its launch in 2004 in New York, by the Consul General, Ken Allen AM.
