Welcome from Advance LA Chair, Simon Anderson

A great career often starts with an ambitious vision. So for many Australians, pursuing the dream of a career with a global perspective means working and living overseas – to expand networks, learn from diverse experiences, and discover new cultures and challenges.

Los Angeles is a global powerhouse of entertainment, finance, marketing and manufacturing industries with the second largest community of Aussies outside Australia.  As the gateway city to the US for Australian business, LA provides a great environment for establishing a new business, learning new skills, and having a lot of fun along the way.

I encourage all Australians who come to LA to further their careers by joining Advance - to help you succeed in your chosen field, to access Advance resources and events, to provide you with the opportunity to connect with other Australians, and most importantly to take part in celebrating our unique Australian character and promoting the interests of Australia.

Advance LA is one our fastest growing networks – where actors and academics, management and marketers network and share ideas together in the continual development and growth of this community.

Welcome to Advance! I look forward to meeting you at one of our LA events in 2008, in this, one of the most exciting and diverse cities on earth.

Despite its many well documented contradictions, Los Angeles is a city that has captivated this former Sydney-sider. The dream of acting opportunities and the smell of espresso, Jenni Baird is taking LA by storm one acting role and coffee cup at a time - Ms Baird is ready to take your questions…

Where are you from in Australia?
My home town is Sydney, New South Wales.

How long have you been in LA, when did you leave Australia?
I have been living in LA since 2004, and luckily got my Greencard in 2006.

So why LA?
I am an actor and my first job out of drama school (WAAPA) had been in the U.S., so it made sense to go back after my first Aussie TV contract was up. I love the numerous opportunities for actors in LA, the heart of this city is entertainment, and I wanted a piece of the action.

What is your role, why do you like it?
Working here is pure joy. The conditions are fantastic, I am also working with my brother, Mark Baird, and partner Michael Petroni, to open up LA's first Australian Cafe, called Longshot. We are almost at the end of our planning stage.

Favourite thing about LA, what are your hobbies here?
I do love to hike in Runyon Canyon with my dog. I love the convenience of LA and how you only have to drive up on Mullholland at sunset and the world looks beautiful again. [More..]
