Australians Urged to Cast Their Vote Now for Australia’s Natural Wonders in New7Wonders of Nature Campaign

With just days to go until voting in stage two of the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign closes, Australia’s two nominees – Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef are sitting in the top 10 of their respective categories. Uluru is currently lying in seventh place in its category, and the Great Barrier Reef in third.

As head of the official supporting committee for Australia, Tourism Australia is encouraging all Australians to support the cause for Australia’s iconic wonders and vote by Tuesday 7 July 2009.

Competition is tough, with Australia’s nominees up against some of nature’s all-time greats such as the Grand Canyon, Ha Long Bay and Mount Everest – we’ve got to wave the Aussie flag.

Both the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru are equally worthy iconic natural wonders and with everyone’s support they have a fantastic chance of reaching the ultimate seven. It’s as simple as visiting www.australia.com and casting a vote for these Australian icons.

Winning a place in the top seven natural wonders of the world would be an amazing honour, and a fantastic opportunity to further promote and preserve the complex balance of Australia’s natural landscapes.

Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef are two of 261 nominated sites from 222 participating countries. Each is vying to sit within the top 77 ranking nominees (11 from each of the seven categories), when voting in stage two closes on 7 July 2009. Successful nominees will be assessed by the New7Wonders Panel of Experts and 21 finalists will be announced on 21 July 2009 to proceed to the final stage of voting, which concludes mid-2011.

All votes are monitored by the New7Wonders Foundation and will alter the standing of each nominee in real time. Every vote will therefore count, and if you voted in the previous stage, you can vote again now as everyone is eligible to vote once in each of the three stages.

Launched in 2007 by the New7Wonders Foundation, the New7Wonders of Nature campaign is a global search to recognise the seven most wondrous sites across the world through the eyes of the public.

Any place that is a clearly defined natural site, monument or landscape that was not created or significantly altered by humans for aesthetic reasons could be nominated.

More than one billion votes worldwide are forecast to determine the final New7Wonders of Nature.

Is Your Fear of "Stuffing Up" Holding You Back?

Last week whilst talking with someone about how they wanted to change career direction, they said to me, "I just wish I knew that this was the right thing to do. It feels like the right thing to do, but I just wish I knew for sure it wasn't going to be a mistake".

"Ahh.... join the club," I thought. "Don't we all?"

We can wish it were otherwise; but the way life works is that only by risking the possibility of making a mistake, aka ‘stuffing up’, can you ever hope to accomplish the things you'd really like to do and experience the rewarding life you'd love to live.

But what are mistakes anyway? The "mis" in mistake comes from the Latin for wrong, and so the word mistake literally translates as to "take wrongly". So when you make a choice to take one course of action over another, and your choice fails to produce the results you wanted (i.e., you got it wrong), you have literally made a mistake.

Obviously there are things you can do to maximize the chances that your actions will produce the results you seek. You can do your "homework," research your options, create a spreadsheet and analyze the numbers. You can consult your financial advisor, your attorney, your mother or your fortune teller. But, if you want to actually do something beyond what you've done up to now, then at some point you are going to have to let go playing safe and risk stuffing up!

Without Risking Mistakes, You Limit Success
No one likes to "stuff up". Well, no one I've met anyway! But look at anyone who has accomplished anything of significance in their life, and you will find they've made a lot more mistakes than someone who has accomplished a little. Any achievement worth your time and energy doesn't come with a guarantee of instant success. That's why it takes courage. Only by having the courage to take a risk now and then can you ever hope to have what you want most - whether in your relationships, your career or business or your life in general.

Learn From the Lesson Every Mistake Offers
Think about how many people who never learn to swim as children never even try to learn as adults. Why? It is because they don't want to go through the same learning curve that every young child does. "Far too humiliating!" Thank goodness we all learnt to walk and talk before our pride and fear got in the way and we took it upon ourselves to decide that our mistakes were a direct reflection of our own worth. When you don't risk mistakes, you sell yourself short; you stagnate and you deprive yourself of ever knowing how strong, resilient and capable you actually are.

Often Only By Learning What Doesn't Work Can We Discover What Does
You see we've all got to start somewhere, whether it's in learning a new skill, entering a new relationship, starting a business, taking on a new role at work, raising kids or writing a book! Part of how we learn what works is by learning first what doesn't. Edison had to stuff up many, many times before he was able to finally succeed. But as he said himself "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

You Are Not Your Mistakes
Whenever you make a mistake, it's important to distinguish who you are from the results (or lack thereof) that you produced. The fact is you are not your mistakes. So if your actions produce result "y" instead of intended "x," see it as just that. You may have stuffed up, but that doesn't mean you're a stuff up. Not at all. Don't make your mistakes mean anything more or less or different than what they are. You made a mistake. That's it, period. It's time to learn the lesson and move on.

So let go of having to achieve a perfect score when it comes to making the right decision every time. Cut yourself some slack and give yourself permission to not get things 100% right 100% percent of the time. Of course, I am not advocating reckless abandon or irresponsibility. However, I am suggesting that once you've decided what you want to do (and done your due diligence) that you step into action toward it despite your doubts and misgivings. It's better to choose to do something than to sit idly by waiting for the day to arrive when you know with 100% certainty which move to take (or choice to make) next. That day may be a loooong time coming.

Fear Regret More Than You Do Failure
Eleanor Roosevelt once said "Most folks tiptoe gently through life only to make it safely to death." So, what new challenges would you take on (and what changes would you make) if you had no fear of stuffing up? Life is way too short to sit on the sidelines wondering what it would be like to play down on center field. So if there is something you'd really love to do, there is no better time than now to make a plan and get started toward it; for if not now, then when, and if not you, then who?

Fear regret more than you do failure. Be Courageous!

Where did you grow up in Australia?

Perth

What brought you to France? How long have you been here? How long do you plan to stay?

I am in Paris with my work. I first arrived in May 2008, although I have lived here permanently since Oct 2008.

What is your current position and your role?

I am the Head Men’s Coach for the French (Field) Hockey Federation. Amongst other things, I coach the French Men’s national team.

What made you decide on this type of work?

In January 2006 I took a 3 year sabbatical from the corporate world and decided to take some time to follow some particular interests of mine. I studied a Masters in Medieval History and worked part time in Sport. I have always loved hockey, and have coached in Perth, but a national coaching position was too good an opportunity to turn down.

What is the best part of your job? Can you describe some of your most memorable moments/stories?

It’s a massive change management exercise at the moment, and it’s exciting to see some of the changes and innovations make a positive difference to the team and our results. A highlight for me so far has been the two matches France recently played against Australia (in Paris). It has been 15 years since Australia has played against France in hockey, and the two matches were very close contests. To coach against my own country was not as surreal as I expected it to be, but it has definitely been a highlight so far. Australia has been one of the top teams in the world for 20 years now, and so I think it was a highlight for the French players too.

What are the challenges and advantages you face in your industry in France?

There are many challenges to compete with other nations who are constantly advancing in their technology, techniques and strategies. However a huge advantage for France (over Australia for example) is our proximity to many other strong teams. It’s quite inexpensive for us to play practice or serious matches against very good opposition.

How has the overseas experience shaped you?

It’s perhaps too early to answer this question, although I hope the shaping of my waistline with the wonderful French food is under control.

Is there anything you miss about Australia?

My wife, and my cat and dog. My wife hasn’t come over yet as she is busy with her work but she’ll hopefully be here soon.

What suggestions do you have for other Australians wanting to follow a similar path?

Early on, I read some great books from Australians having had a similar experience here in Paris. They were entertaining reads, as well as being a nice support in terms of someone else already have experienced what I was going through. There is often significant culture shock, so having some point of reference was great. You can get this from other ex-pats here, so it’s important to get out and join some networks, which makes life much easier.

Do you plan to return to Australia?

Yes. But I am not sure when at this stage.

Where did you grow up in Australia?
I grew up in Perth, Western Australia - a very beautiful place.

What brought you to the US? How long have you been here? How long do you plan to stay?
I was presented with a job offer that I could not refuse. I have been here since September 2000 (that would be nine years in September). I plan to stay here as long as I am able to gain experience.

What is your current position and your role?
I am the VP of Technology and Security for a company called IMRIC Inc.

What made you decide on this type of work?
I have always loved technology, and I did extremely well at mathematics and physics in school. Things I did for fun have now become my bread and butter!

What is the best part of your job? Can you describe some of your most memorable moments/stories?
Being able to play with new advanced technologies and meeting people from many facets of technology and culture, in addition to advancing my knowledge which I can convey to others. One of my most memorable moments was when we were first designing to allocate the use of wireless broadband for a city wide project. This was going to be the first city to have wireless broadband in the world. After a year of hard work, we managed to deploy the first wireless city and we now have multiple locations around the world. It will become a criterion in a few years just like electricity is to everyone at present in the US.

What are the challenges and advantages you face in your industry in the US?
The US is large place for experience and technology. Anyone is able to garner the benefits if one is to apply one's self. The challenge is to be in the precise niche of technology. At present, security technology is one of the biggest technologies in the world.

How has the overseas experience shaped you?
It has given me a broader view of life style, technology, culture and people. It has also taught me a varied governing system with the Fortune 100 companies in the world. The US is one of the few countries that coin many of the requirements that will contour the new expertises, which will promulgate around the world.

Is there anything you miss about Australia?
My family and surfing, also the great fish and chips in Fremantle, Perth.

What suggestions do you have for other Australians wanting to follow a similar path?
If you are young and have the ambition to succeed in life, it would be best to travel the world. Being able to work in different geographical locales will open one's mind to new culture and adventure plus invaluable knowledge. As the famous phrase goes - scientia potentia est – literally translated from Latin, “Knowledge itself is Power”

Do you plan to return to Australia?
Yes, when I have made the required returns and am ready to retire in Australia.

Assaults on Indians 'not race-based'

As protests grow louder against allegedly race-motivated attacks against Indian students in Australia, police say the number of such robberies and assaults is falling.

Police commander Trevor Carter, whose division covers Melbourne's west, the national hotspot for attacks, said yesterday assaults on Indians had declined over the past three months.

However, the police chief's comments coincided with another attack, in which a 21-year-old Indian student was slashed with a box-cutter when confronted yesterday afternoon by five men who demanded money and cigarettes at Dandenong, in Melbourne's southeast.

Police said there was nothing to indicate that the assault, which within hours was being widely reported on Indian news websites, was racially motivated. [More...]

Rudd forms Indian violence taskforce

A SPECIAL taskforce, headed by the Prime Minister's national security adviser, Duncan Lewis, has been set up to co-ordinate Australia's response to the violence against Indian's students.

The action by Kevin Rudd indicates how serious the issue has become for Australia, threatening the relationship with an increasingly important country, and the lucrative international students sector.

The taskforce, which includes senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney-General's Department and the Departments of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and Immigration and Citizenship, met for the first time yesterday. Future depends on Asian languages

AUSTRALIANS risk being marooned in the dated jobs and industries of the 20th century unless a $11.3 billion mass Asian language literacy plan is acted on within a generation, according to Michael Wesley, a leading expert on international relations.

Ahead of today's Sydney launch of a report documenting "a precipitous decline" in the study of languages at universities, Professor Wesley said it was not enough to rely on a fluent elite to project Australia's interests in theregion.

"Simply relying on an elite means the rest of Australian society - as our economy internationalises and becomes more knowledge-intensive - will be trapped in 20th-century industries, while other countries will be moving ahead and taking part in the 21st-century knowledge economy," he said.

The report from Professor Wesley's Asia Institute at Griffith University, titled "Building an Asia-Literate Australia", says Mandarin, Japanese and Indonesian should be given priority since they are the languages of Australia's two largest trading partners and closest neighbours respectively. The wannabe starlet has left a clear battle line in her wake, between those who say everything is fine with the state of our multiculturalism and those who reckon the tyres need checking. The protests over violence against Indian students in Australia and former Telstra boss Sol Trujillo's snipe accusing Australians of racism have added fuel to the fire.

Who to believe? For the most part, the media and politicians keep telling us: "Nothing to see here, move on." But the old cultural battlegrounds, the ones we thought we'd left behind, look to have resurfaced. They've resurfaced with the "we grew here, you flew here" generation, flying the flag on Australia Day and the Southern Cross tattoo. Where did you grow up in Australia?

I grew up in Adelaide and then after spending some time in London moved to Sydney for 2 years before coming to the US.

What brought you to the US? Love - first, but also to gain experience in a culture hub like New York.

How long have you been here?

Since February 09, so only 4 months! When I got off the plane it really hit home that it was about 70 degrees colder than where I had come from!

How long do you plan to stay?

Not sure…

What is your current position and your role?

Whilst I’m unable to work here, I have found a few ways to keep busy. I work as an Online Services & Events Intern with Advance, as well as volunteering with Housing Works, a large not-for-profit here that works to provide housing, healthcare and education for New Yorkers living with HIV & AIDS. I also study a Bachelor of Arts - Communications full time at Griffith University through Open Universities Australia.

What made you decide on this type of work?

The internship with Advance is a great way of building my online communications and web skills. I also really believe in their ethos that networking is crucial in business, particularly for someone outside of their home country. Choosing to volunteer with Housing Works was a no brainer. A large focus for them is national advocacy, as well as running thrift shops, bookstores, cafes, and large scale design events – they’re very diverse and successful.

What is the best part of your job?

The people I work with, and working in a relaxed environment. That was a big draw card for me.

Can you describe some of your most memorable moments/stories?

The pancakes at Veselka, the installations at Dia:Beacon, and the ANZAC Day ceremony on top of the Rockefeller Centre.

What are the challenges and advantages you face in your industry in the US?

Challenges - getting a visa! It’s pretty tough here right now but it is do-able.

Advantages – There are so many people at the top of their game here, it’s a great feeling to be able to tap into that. There are also a heap of affordable writing/editing/web courses run by top industry people constantly.

How has the overseas experience shaped you?

I think like any longer term overseas experience you go through homesickness and feelings of displacement, but it builds your confidence and your understanding of how different people go about their lives. It doesn’t hurt your CV either.

Is there anything you miss about Australia?

My family and friends, (ten-fold!) it feels strange to go from having a network of people close by whom you love and trust, to 15 million strangers. It’s important to reach out to people where you are though and in doing so you can learn a lot about yourself. Other than that - the beach & the seafood are up there.

What suggestions do you have for other Australian’s wanting to follow a similar path?

It can be scary leaving a world that you know, especially as we get older and more attached to things. I lost count of how many people told me I was crazy moving to New York in a recession, but at least the rent is so much cheaper right now! I guess keep positive and keep things in perspective – and don’t be thrown off by how intense New York can get.

Do you plan to return to Australia?

Yes – absolutely!

What brought you to the US?

I came to do a PhD in Economics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

How long have you been here?
I arrived in 1994, so coming up on 15 years.

How long do you plan to stay?
Probably forever!

What is your current position and your role?
I am an economist with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is similar to the ACCC in Australia and is responsible for antitrust, merger regulation and consumer protection. I work on antitrust and merger review, analysing the economic impact of those things. I also conduct academic style research related to competition policy.

What made you decide on this type of work?
The FTC offered me a job, and they didn’t require US Citizenship!

What is the best part of your job?
You get to be actually involved in decisions that impact consumers. I can combine the academic research with actual public policy.

Can you describe some of your most memorable moments/stories?
Not particularly. Most of what we do inside the agency is confidential. Working on a case that went to court was probably the most memorable experience. It was a lot of work, a lot of pressure and a lot of tension, even some yelling. I’m not sure I would want to do it again. I certainly gained a lot of respect for people that work as expert witnesses in antitrust cases.

What are the challenges and advantages you face in your industry in the US?
Government is certainly a nice place to be at these times. Government offers good pay, interesting work without the long hours required in some industries. It is nice if you have a family with two full-time employees and children.

How has the overseas experience shaped you?
Travelling and living overseas is very exciting. I really feel at home in the US and I enjoy living in DC. For good or bad, you break from what you grew up with and start over to some extent.

Is there anything you miss about Australia?
I miss my family. My brother and his family as well as my parents still live in Melbourne.

What suggestions do you have for other Australian’s wanting to follow a similar path?

I would certainly encourage Australians interested in doing a PhD in Economics to apply to US programs. Coming out of a US school opens doors to many areas including ones that you may never have considered like working for the FTC.

Do you plan to return to Australia?
Probably not permanently, but if there is an opportunity to spend a few months in Australia, we may take that.
