Message from the Premier of Western Australia, Hon Alan J Carpenter MLA
As Premier and Minister for State Development of Australia’s most trade and export-oriented State, I welcome Western Australia’s participation in the Advance network.
With high rates of economic growth consistently above the national average, Western Australia is experiencing a massive and historic economic expansion that’s creating significant numbers of new jobs and business opportunities.
The State’s leading industries and growing capabilities are all strongly linked to the drivers and shapers of global economic development, and that complementary connection points to long-term success in developing our economy.
While Western Australia is well known for it’s huge mineral and petroleum base, both of which are experiencing unprecedented demand, we are building on that base by developing knowledge industries of the future that will diversify the State’s economy and prolong the expansion. [More...]
Message from Doug Partington - USA Director, Western Australian Trade and Investment Office
The Western Australian Trade and Investment Office recently appointed Doug Partington as Director of their American office. Doug takes over the role from David Doepel who has accepted a Perth-based position with the Western Australian government.
Since taking over as Director of the Western Australian Trade and Investment Office in America I’ve been amazed by how many great Western Australians I’ve met and how big an impact their talents and businesses are having here in the US.
In my former role as Manager of the Americas Desk at the Department of Industry and Resources in Perth I was aware of many of these WA success stories, often assisting West Australians as they prepared to enter the US marketplace.
Now I get the opportunity to help West Australians do business in America – in America.
I’m not sure there could be a better fit for an Australian/American who has spent the past few years entrenched in the workings of WA’s exciting industry and resources sector…and now gets to use that knowledge on the other side of the world, in his other ‘home’. [More...]

Dr John Cullity – Senior Director, Business Development, sanofi aventis pharmaceuticals
John’s current position as head of Business Development for the world’s third largest pharmaceuticals company may seem a long way from the lush grounds of the University of Western Australia – but his successes are in keeping with his family’s history of innovation and achievement.
When John Cullity began his medical degree at UWA he joined the five generations of his family to have attended the University. He attributes much of his success – and the contributions other Cullity’s have made across a diverse range of fields including law, medicine, viticulture and forestry - to the excellence of the education they received at UWA.
John’s career has taken him – literally – around the world. He has lived and worked in China, India, Kenya, Bolivia, the UK and, since 1997, the United States. His resume includes positions with The World Bank, WHO and global consultancy firm, AT Kearney.
Along the way he has completed an MBA from Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, a medical specialist degree from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and an MSc (Econs) from London School of Economics.
John sits on the board of Advance and UWA America. [More...]
